Gardening and Nutrition Experiences
for the Young Child
Cooking in the classroom:
When children have explored and tasted the vegetable in its raw form, they are more interested and willing to participate in the cooking and tasting process.
Children are encouraged to participate in each step of the recipe preparation as developmentally appropriate, by measuring, cutting (with safe tools), mixing, and preparing the food for serving.
In addition, the cooking experience connects the Early Sprouts project to other curriculum areas, such as math, science, literacy, and social skill development.
Each week a
nutritionally
sound recipe is prepared by the children with the
assistance
of the teacher.
